Toyota's Topless Model Commercial airs only in Japan (Video)

Toyota shocked the world when they recently released their new 2013 Auris Hatchback commercial.  Before you think I actually downloaded a commercial of a topless woman to share with the world, think again.  Your mind sees what it wants!!! That's what 19 year old male model Stav Strashko who is the topless model seen in this commercial ad said.  Stav is a androgyny model.  That means he has features that could pass as either a woman or a man.  Stav has modeled for both womens and mens clothing, but he has never thought of becoming a woman and he is very comfortable in his own skin.  Read more on Strav Strashko in Candy Magazine.

Toyota's slogan for the ad reads "Not trendy, not casual, not for everyone".

See for yourself the ad that sparked controversy.

Funny Japanese Game Shows "Human Cockroach Trap" (video)

One thing I remember when I was a kid was watching Japanese shows with my mom and dad.  One of my favorites are the Japanese Game Shows and Pranks.  They are so unbelievably funny.  Watching my dad literally laugh so hard when he watches the Japanese Game show and Pranks would get us all laughing even harder.  I still enjoy sharing these videos and watching the reactions of those who never saw a Japanese Game Show before.  It's always the same reactions.  No one believes that the Japanese people would actually do these silly and sometimes dangerous pranks to unsuspecting people on the streets.

If you haven't seen a Japanese Game Show, please take a moment and watch some of these videos.  I have literally seen and shared these videos hundreds of times, I thought it would be simpler if I just added these to my blog and continue share them with everyone else.  You honestly don't have to understand japanese to understand the show.

Squid Ink, The Miracle Dye

Squid Ink, can it be good for you?  Recent studies have found that ink from squid has potential anti-cancer properties.  New studies show the Squid Ink could prevent tumor metastasis and possible angiogenesis.  Squid Ink also is used to enhance the flavor of food and be used as color in certain dishes such as rice and pasta.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="300"]This is black pasta, or squid ink pasta. Usual... This is black pasta, or squid ink pasta. Usually it is tossed with mussels or other seafood, but I'm on a budget here, so it was zucchini, garlic, and olive oil for us. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

Huffington Post reported a new trend in Japan.  For a limited time Japan's Burger King is advertising their new Kuro Burgers.  Kuro Burger meaning Black Burger in japanese, are hamburgers with black buns that made with bamboo charcoal and ketchup made from Squid Ink.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="240"]BK Squid Ink Burger BK Squid Ink Burger (Photo credit: Takoyaki_King)[/caption]

According to LiveStrong.com, Squid Ink's main ingredient is melanin, the same matter that gives color to skin and hair.  Squid ink is a natural component and is the perfect ingredient for dyeing your hair a dark color.  Unless you are allergic to Squid ink, it is an excellent choice since it does not contain impurities.  For me personally I have used HI-Speed Squid Ink hair dye.  It's amazing!  There is no need to put vaseline around the hairline because it does not stain the skin.  When rinsing the product out you do not need to use shampoo because it rinses clean.  Another plus with using this product is that the color gradually fades away, therefore there is no mark when the new hair grows in.  I must say, after washing the product out, my hair is very soft and shiny.  Squid Ink, the Miracle Dye, Asia's new Trend.

Asian T.V. Drama Hana Yori Dango Makes Flower Boys Popular

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300"]Hana Yori Dango Returns (TV series) Hana Yori Dango Returns (TV series) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

J Drama and K Drama are a big hit in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and in the Asian American Community right here in America!  Among the top favorite Asian Drama Series is Hana Yori Dango (meaning Flower before boys in Japanese).  This 1992 comic book series became a japanese cartoon series in 1996. In 2001, the first of the Hana Yori Dango T.V. dramas series originated in Taiwan called Meteor Garden. In 2005, Japan made its first Hana Yori Dango T.V. series debut.  Gaining much fans and attention around the Asian World.  Korea then made its Hana Yori Dango series called Flowers Before Boys in 2009.  Becoming an overnight hit, Hana Yori Dango has made Japanese Actors Matsumoto Jun and Shun Oguri and Korean Actors Lee Min Ho and Kim Hyun Joong an icon for young men today.  After the Korean broadcast of Hana Yori Dango, "hallyu" (a korean popular wave) among young men wanting to look more trendy like the actors in the drama, including wearing makeup, was noticed in S. Korea.  This trend called Flower Boys (young men) or Flower Men (older men) is becoming quite popular.  In fact today the fastest growing beauty trend is mens skin care and makeup in S.Korea.  According to Good Morning America the Euromonitor International, a global market research firm, says 21% of men's beauty came from Korea in 2011 and expects to double in the next year.  Today, Flower Boys are appealing to the young asian girls.  Living in a world of first impressions; being trendy, fashionable and having good looks is a must for these Asian Flower Boys.

Update: 14 lifeguards fired in El Monte, CA

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpVmMtUlKQc&w=420&h=315]

Another meeting on October 16, 2012 ,was packed with supporters of the former El Monte, "Gangnam Style" lifeguards. On a 3-2 vote, council members propose that the lifeguards have their jobs reinstated.  Nearly two months of investigation and court battle   most of the lifeguards will not be returning to their jobs.
"I think I will just resign and have my record reclaimed because this is taking too long, and it's just too stressful," said 20-year-old Baldwin Park resident Amelia Rangel. "I just want to put it behind me already and move on."

Senior lifeguard Daniel Surmenian said that although he was still debating the decision, he doubted the Aquatic Center would be a positive work environment upon his return.

"(I would go back) if I felt safe going back there and thought I wouldn't be targeted in any way," he said. "It would be difficult with the management right now."  Reported the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

Asian Women's Secret to Flawless Younger Skin

What is the difference between American women and Asian women? For the typical American woman, she is obsessed with body image.  Whereas, a woman from Asia is obsessed with flawless skin.  Japan is the largest skin care consumption per capita in the world.
1. "Japan has the world’s oldest population, with 22% over the age of 65 in 2007. According to Euromonitor International, 'The country is the biggest consumer of skin care on a per capita basis. In 2007, Japan accounted for 20% of global skin care consumption with $13.1 billion in sales, while making up only 2% of the global population.'" *

In Asia, skin is the most important part of a beauty regiment.  Good skin equals good health and beauty.  Despite the popularity of some westernized types of surgery in Asia, Asian women are obsessed with keeping up their youthful appearance in the traditional way.  Asians are not as passionate about stripping the skin with chemical peels as Americans are, rather they like to plump the skin, giving a more youthful look. Many Japanese and Korean girls spend hours on just skin care routine.  So whats the secret?  The secret is Japanese facial massage.

Japanese facial massage focuses on prevention and detoxifying.  Developed to improve health and longevity,  the Japanese have perfected the facial massage over centuries.  A specific technique called Ko Bi Do is used for balancing ki for overall health improvement.

Western vs. Eastern facial massage.

Western facial massages mainly focuses on the external skin.  This typically is a gentle massage with light touches and strokes and could include treating a skin concern with topical skin regiments. Chemical peel such as glycolic peel are common.

Eastern facial massages mainly focuses on the condition of the skin internally, focusing on acupressure points to balance (ki) internal organs.  The Japanese facial massage uses deeper pressure and deep kneading to stimulate the muscles beneath the skin, increasing blood circulation.  This in turn will reduce wrinkles, repair and balance the skin, and minimize the aging process.

Typically Asian women will include some form of this massage in their daily skin care routine.  The Tanaka Massage is one of the simpler routines and can be done by yourself.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="160"]Pink Tokyo Tower Pink Tokyo Tower (Photo credit: Zengame)[/caption]

It is a fact that in Asia the statistics for women and breast cancer is quite low compared to America.  In America 1 out of 8 women will develop breast cancer in her life time.  That is 5 times higher than the women in Japan according to Doctor Murray.  Nonetheless, that number is on the rise for asian women.  The social stigma behind breast cancer in Japan, S. Korea and China is almost unbearable for many women, many would rather go untreated.  Still today there are some that believe that Asian women don't get breast cancer.  Today, S. Korea, Japan and China are trying to educate and erase the social stigmatism about Breast Cancer.  See how these countries are raising awareness on Breast Cancer.

Japan:

Every October the Peninsula Tokyo Hotel light's up in Pink, for Breast Cancer Awareness. ¥400 will be donated for every sale from the Pink restaurant or Spa promotional to the Japan Association of Breast Cancer Screening and Keep A Breast Japan.  Hotel staff are wearing pink ribbon pins and are handing out  early detection pamphlets to their guests.

S. Korea:

Women pose in front of posters of Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in Seoul, South Korea.

Amore Pacific supports KBCF (Korea Breast Cancer Foundation) by providing low-income families with preventive examination, research on breast related diseases and supporting operation charges.

GM Chevrolet shows off a pink car in Cheonggye Square, Korea, in support of Breast Cancer.

China:

Chinese Government Health Agency and hospitals target prevention and treatment in women between ages 35 - 54.  Studies have shown that Chinese women in this age group are not  likely to talk about the disease openly.

Famous artists participated in "Pink Artists" in support of Breast Cancer Prevention Campaign on Sept 29, 2012.

Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation HKBCF, is dedicated to support the local community through education, support and research.

THINK PINK! Asian American Breast Cancer Awareness

[caption id="attachment_486" align="alignleft" width="112"] Photo Credit: Ionasiatrend[/caption]

One of the most commonly diagnosed cancers for Asian-Americans today is breast cancer.  While it is true that Asian American women are less likely to get breast cancer than any other ethnic group in America, it is on the rise.  Here are some facts: According to American Cancer Society in 2012 about 226,870 new breast cancer cases will be diagnosed in women. Thats about 125.7 per 100,000 women. Among them 39,510 will die as the result of breast cancer. Female Breast Cancer by ethic group:

Asian American and Pacific Islander womenWhite (non-Hispanic) womenAfrican American women
Incidence (new cases)84.9 per 100,000125.4 per 100,000116.1 per 100,000
Mortality (deaths)12.2 per 100,00023.9 per 100,00032.4 per 100,000

The new cases of breast cancer significantly increases for Asian woman living in America up to six-fold in as little as a decade according to Asian American Health Initiative. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. Since its inception in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a global series of more than 140 Races with more than 1.6 million people expected to participate in 2012 in four continents. The Komen Race for the Cure is a unique event, designed and implemented to promote positive awareness, education and early detection of breast cancer. It has proved to be an enormously effective way to reach many women and men with the message that breast cancer is not necessarily fatal if mammography and breast self-exam become routine. As well as being a race for runners, the Komen Race for the Cure is an emotionally charged event that attracts many first timers and recreational runners. The Komen Race for the Cure is an opportunity for thousands of women, men and their families, running or walking, to spread the breast cancer message within our community. Up to 75 percent of the net proceeds raised at the Race remain here in Central Florida to provide breast cancer education, screening and treatment for for uninsured or underinsured women. The remaining 25 percent goes to fund national research to discover the causes of breast cancer and, ultimately, its cures. The Komen Central Florida Race for the Cure is the Central Florida Affiliate's largest annual fundraiser. http://www.komencentralflorida.org/komen-race-for-the-cure/

About the Race:

The Race for the Cure series raises significant funds and awareness for the breast cancer movement. It’s a time to celebrate survivors and their families while working toward the promise of ending breast cancer forever. The effectiveness of Komen San Diego’s mission is entirely dependent on our network of sponsors and volunteers. Money raised by Race participants helps expand access to lifesaving screening and treatment while providing funding for cutting-edge breast cancer research. For the past twenty years, Komen San Diego has provided tens of thousands of low-income women access to critical breast cancer screening and treatment. Our 360-degree approach is making a difference, with breast cancer mortality rates down and five-year survival rates up. We support survivors by removing barriers to lifesaving care while also investing in cutting-edge research. Every major advance in global breast cancer research in the last quarter century has been touched by Komen for the Cure dollars. http://www.komensandiego.org/race/

Update: on PSY's "Do not fire, please"

Just a little update on the El Monte, California's 14 lifeguard situation.  On October 2, 2012 the city council had a 5 hour meeting discussing the reinstatement of the 14 lifeguards that were fired over a remake of the "Gangnam Style" called "Lifeguard Style" video.  El Monte Mayor Andre Quintero is in favor of  rehiring all the guards back.  But because the Mayors motion was not on the meetings agenda, the council could not vote on rehiring the lifeguards according to 89.3 KPCC Public Radio blog.

[caption id="attachment_410" align="alignright" width="180"] Image from: facebook: BringBack the 14 El Monte Lifeguards[/caption]

When Mayor Quintero was asked on California's 89.3 KPCC Public Radio about the lifeguards video, he stated that he liked the video and he did not find it to be offensive.  The Mayor was also surprised to find that the lifeguard's video had reached an international spotlight, putting El Monte on the maps. As of today, the lifeguard video has almost 2 million views on youtube.

The next meeting will be held on October 16, 2012.  Lets hope the City Council gets their act together and rehires these lifeguards.  Keep following for an update.

The next generation of B.B Cream has arrived! C.C Cream!

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300"]Rachel K Rachel K (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

While America is only starting to catch on to the B.B. cream wave, Japan and S. Korea have already moved on to the new wave of C.C. cream.   What is CC cream? C.C. cream also called color corrector cream, is the new and improved B.B. cream.  CC cream focuses on enhancing your skin color and tone with amped up skin care benefits like green tea leaf extracts to detox your skin, white tea extracts a super antioxidant that stops free radicals and deep sea water for increased hydration penetration.  In Japan and S. Korea, Rachel K CC cream is number 1, formulated with pure minerals.

Currently the C.C. cream is only available in Asia.  The first C.C. creams to hit U.S.A. seems to be the drug store brand Oil of Olay.  Soon to be released October 2012.

B.B. Creams!

On the contrary to popular belief, BB cream was not made in Korea.  Actresses from Japan and South Korea made this product popular all over Asia.  BB cream was invented by  Dr. Christine Schrammek, a German Dermatologist in 1967.  This blemish balm as she called it, was designed as an anti-inflammatory agent, to help heal and conceal redness after skin surgery.  Dr. Schrammek's original BB cream can still be purchased today through her website.   Today's BB creams from Asia are an all-in-one product that:

  • Treats acne, lightens dark spots

  • Gives subtle and natural glow

  • Fights lines and refines the skin

  • Provides perfect coverage without clogging pores

  • Evens skin tone

  • Regenerates skin to create and maintain youth

Recently, this all in one BB cream has hit the American market, but not without notable differences between the two creams.  The main difference between Asia's and America's BB cream is that the Asian cream has a skin lightening agent called arbutin or ogliopeptide-68, which can help lighten the skin over time.  In America, this lightening agent has been reduced or removed.  Asian BB cream also has ingredients such as rosemary, camomile, hyaluronic acid and beechtree bud.  Also the Asian BB creams tends to be thicker and usually has a higher SPF than the American counterpart.  Personally, I find the American BB creams to be just another fancy name for a tinted moisturizer, with an SPF and little to no skin care benefits.

My personal favorite Asia BB cream is Missha M Perfect Cover BB cream #21- this BB cream is an all-in-one product that protects with an SPF 42 PA +++, has an anti wrinkle agent and whitens.  This BB creams lives up to its claims; it moisturizes, conceals and lightens.  I love how this product looks and feels.  On days I feel I need a little more coverage, I add a little tinted moisturizer (Amore Pacific) on top of the BB cream.  Missha is definitely a must have.  You can currently get this product online.  If you live in the Orlando, Florida area you can purchase this product at Woo Sung Oriental Food Mart.  BB creams are an Asian Trend here to stay in America!  There is a new Asian Trend buzzing that's about to hit America, what is it you ask?  I will be posting this upcoming trend very soon!

It's KPOP! not HipHop Baby......

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300"]Philippines edition Philippines edition (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

"Kpop?.... You mean HipHop?"  I hear that all the time from folks who are not hip on the Asian music.  Korean Pop music is the hot new "Asia Trend"! Originating from South Korea, this eclectic style of hip hop, dance, R & B and electropop music is hitting the charts all across Asia and Europe.  Recently, PSY's Gangnam Style has gone wild and viral around the world, helping to open doors for Kpop music to reach more and more people with just one click.  One of my favorites Kpop artist is 2NE1.

Their debut song "Fire" was released May 6, 2009.  They have had many hit singles over the last 3 years including "Cant Nobody" Korean version released September 11, 2010 and "Cant Nobody" english version released January 19, 2011 in Japan.  "Naega Jeil Jal Naga" (I am the best) released June 24, 2011. Currently their 2012 "New Evolution"tour, will include Newark and L.A. along with 7 other different countries in their tour stops.  If you haven't heard of 2NE1, please take a moment and give Kpop a listen.  This Asia Trend of Korean wave "Hallyu" is here to stay.

Chasing waves and dreams........

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="240"]Kenji Croman's photo Kenji Croman's photo (Photo credit: zsoolt)[/caption]

What makes a person successful?  Most would agree that it takes hard work, passion, support from friends and family and most important loving what you do.  I have only met a few who are truly successful.  One particular Asian American is becoming a superstar wave photographer in Hawaii, known for his breath taking photographs of unique wave barrels.  Kenji Croman is truly a success.  Chasing waves and his dreams, Kenji truly captures his love and passion with every wave snapshot.  Recently, he has started a kickstarter program called "Chasing Waves" to raise enough funds to travel to South America, enabling him to capture rare shots of unique waves.  He is not asking for charity, all monies raised will be going back into his work.  With as little as a $25 minimum pledge, you will receive a signed photo of your choice, 1 out 5 of his most popular and breath taking images on a quality 5x7 photo paper.  Recently, his beautiful wife wrote an amazing article on her blog "Island Fever Sisters" on the dangers her husband faces while chasing his dream.  All of his hard work has not gone unnoticed, Kenji recently was promoted on Ashton Kutcher's Facebook and Twitter.  With all the support of his friends and family, no wonder Kenji Croman is so successful. Kenji Croman, an upcoming Asian American photographer.  He is "Asia Trend"!  He also is my brother.......I'm very proud of him.

Japanese Straight Perm

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300"]Kamisuki (Combing the hair), A colour woodbloc... Kamisuki (Combing the hair), A colour woodblock print, Japan, Taishō era, 1920 Goyō (1880-1921) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

What is a Japanese Straight Perm?

Its a Japanese technique that uses thermal reconditioning to straighten your hair. Depending how long or how thick your hair is, this process could take up to 6 hours.  The results are silky, shiny, straight hair.  The results could last up to 6 months.  I have had this done to my hair several times.  I have gone to a few different asian salons and even to the pricey non-asian salon (totally not worth the money).  The best I have to say are the Japanese Hair Salons.  Not only are the results different (hands down), but if you've never been to a Japanese Hair Salon, you are missing out!

The major difference between a Japanese Hair Salon is the unique service you get.  From the moment you walk into a Japanese salon you will hear the traditional "irrashimasei".  I love that!  Next difference is the Japanese hair shampooing technique which is a scalp massage and scrub.  Later you also get a neck and shoulder massage, hot green tea and sometimes japanese cookies.

My favorite salon is Axis Hair Salon located in Honolulu across Ala Moana Shopping Center Sears side.  Naoko Nakamura is the salon owner from Tokyo, she speaks english very well.  So don't let that fool you when you call the salon, because they will answer the phone in Japanese.  Walking into Axis Hair  Salon is truly like stepping in a salon in Japan.  Axis Salon is sophisticated with a modern contemporary look that makes you feel so relaxed.  Naomi has current Japanese magazines with todays hair styles for men and women.  One of her popular services on her menu is called "head spa", I truly recommend this!!!!  Axis Hair Salon currently does not have their own website, the website I referred to is http://www.aloha-street.com/beauty/dp/7626 .  Her popularity is all through word of mouth (thats how I found out about her 3 years ago).  She does take walk-in's, but I truly recommend that you call for an appointment.  She is usually booked days in advanced, I have seen her turn people down.

(VIDEO) Gangnam Style PSY (ft. Hyuna)

(VIDEO LINK)  WTF/FTW: PSY - ft. HYUNA GANGNAM STYLE (오빤 딱 내 스타일 ) (vgarmada.wordpress.com)

PSY earnestly request "Do not fire, please"

14 lifeguards were fired after posting their version of "Gangnam Style" video on to youtube.  The City of El Monte, California did not authorized the lifeguards use of city property including the use of their city-issued uniform to make this video. The lifeguards said they made this video while on break over a 2 day period and meant no harm.  They just wanted to have a little fun.  PSY earnestly requested to the Mayor of El Monte "I'm begging you not to fire Please".  As of today, there is over 1.7 million hits on their Lifeguard Style youtube video, over 16,000 Facebook likes on their "Bring back the 14 El Monte Lifeguards" page and over 14,500 signatures on their petitions. Will all this help? We will have to wait and see.
